Or was it around before this?

I am aware of the meaning of the word! I have seen the show (there's a clue in my Avatar name!). I just want to know if the word was around before Red Dwarf.

No, it featured on The Young Ones before Red Dwarf, but the Dwarf made it their own. It comes from the word smegma, which basically means knob cheese.

It originates from the word smegma meaning soap I think in Greek and it can refer to a milky discharge around the penis or the vagina...I guess from there it changed into an insult on Red Dwarf and a damn fine one at that! It has also been credited to Monty Python's Flying Circus as well. Go figure eh?

Ok the word 'smeg' was widely used and popularised in the Dwarf series, however it came from the word 'smegma' which - this is the gross bit - is the white cream/discharge that gathers round the foreskin of a penis.

I believe it was 'invented' or rather used first by Red Dwarf. It actually comes, if i remember rightly, from the word 'smegma' look it up in a dictionary ;)

It's an electrical manufacturer, Italian I think, that make cookers, fridge-freezers, washing machines, sinks, dishwashers ...

I first saw their name when the BBC2 series Ready Steady Cook used their gas hobs!

(According to WIkipedia, Smeg was founded in 1948 in Italy, and the name stands for Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastalla. BORING!)
