I start volunteer work at local zoo tomorrow, and am very excited! Would like to know some of your experiences with this from where you are. Did you learn alot?

If you are an animal lover you will enjoy your time..
However

Be realistic in your expectations.. Most zoos..especially larger ones do not let volunteers handle or be in direct contact with the animals and if they do its afer a period of training...

Often you are cleaning up poo, cages, enclosures, dealing with guests or any other non direct care...
You may have to work up to direct animal contact.

Best advice is keep your eyes and ears open and listen to the folks and you will learn a lot....

And dont be complacent... Zoo or no Zoo they are still animals and behvior can be unpredictable.

Have fun and good luck!

while i was in high school i attended some courses at the Los Angeles Zoo to do volunteer work. i had more fun making friends and playing around than learning the basic rules of doing this and that. i wish i had paid more attention to my surroundings than the friends.

in general i had a good time. i never got to work directly with the animals but we were able to help around setting up shows and presentations or kid activities.

all i can remember, was one time our teacher took us to visit the orangutang on a research we were suppose to do. the zoo was closed at the time so it was just the teacher and 20 students. the min she began talking the female began making noices, every one looked closer and right in front of everyone the two male and female were mating. and not only that, but after she was done, another female jumped in began teh entire action. it was so funny, it got pretty intensive that the teacher kinda cancelled the 'research presentation' and moved along.

the only thing i remember, hehe...it was back in 1996, about 10 years ago..wow..long time....
