Lights are only needed in a freshwater tank for plant growth (and sometimes to help keep the water warm). The fish don't care, so do what's best for you.

You can turn the light off during the day if the tank gets to much light you may have problems with algae, Put the tank near a window, not close enough for direct light or a draft. But close enough that natural light will illuminate the tank. If you want to keep the light on buy a timer about ($3) to shut the light off after a few hours.

You should keep it on in the daytime and turn it off at night. Don't leave it on for too long or algae (messy green stuff) will grow everywhere. I keep the lights on my aquarium on for 10 hours a day. From about 11-00am until 9-00pm (so's I get to enjoy them in the evening).

You can turn the light off during the day. That is what I have been doing for 2 years and my fish are fine. Once it gets a bit dark you should turn the light on.

hi

You dont say what size teh tank is or what kind of fish are kept in it or how many... type of filter used and so on

Everyone is right about the algea..

I guess a general rule of t humb that works mostly
Is set your tank light on a timer. Some set it tot the time it is light outside... so it comes on around sun up and goes off around sundown...

There are many factors that influence algeas growth... If it were me I would set it from about 8am-6pm so you get 10 hours of light

I dont reccomend more than that. It's important to the health of the tank that you do however have reg. light times.. so a timer works well for t his... you can find them anywhere for around 10.00

Good Luck

You really only want the light on for a maximum of 12 hours. Go to the hardware store in your local area, and buy yourself a simple timer for lamps. Then you can set it for a 12 hour period, and I'd just set it up for when I was home the most to enjoy the light of the tank.

Turn it on when you wake up and off when the sun goes down outside or when you go to bed. Leaving it off to long can cause health problems for your fish, will kill any live plants and actually promotes certain kinds of algae.
