We covered our front steps with decking wood with a nail space between each board; our dog got her nail stuck in a space & we had to run to the vet. She's fine now. How can we fill in the spaces between each board without doing the job over again? Right now I have out door rugs covering the beautiful wood.

You don't want to fill the gap in with anything. You've done the right thing by keeping a gap between the boards. If you don't, when the wood dries out after being wet, it will start to cup and push against one another causing it to buckle. Then you'll be back to putting on new boards to replace the old.

Better you should keep your dogs nails trimmed(they scratch the wood anyway) so they won't get caught.
