As you have been told, elderberries are a powerful antioxidant...great for jelly & wine & grow very easily from a seed. In my area they are treated as a weed as well, and sprayed with 2-4-D weed killer by the dept of roads and the electric company. Very little, (if any )preperation is needed to plant the seeds. You might want to rip out any grass in the area you want to plant them and sprinkle a few in each area and scratch in a bit. It will take several years for them to be big enough to harvest berries. I've transplanted successfully small plants from areas where I knew they would eventually be sprayed. The grow like crazy around power lines. Birds eat them...sit on the power line...seed passes threw them and plant themselves!

Good question, I am planting them also, I just dry them- they will grow easy, fact is I have several plants in my flower beds, that I did not grow intentionally, kids fooling with the berries and the seeds planted them selves.
I use the juice to flavor my homemade Grape Wine- and Elderberry is used to Cure the Flu- proven in Panama, Norway and Israel.

My girlfriend said her mom used to make elderberry jelly. She has to travel far to buy this jelly. I have not seen any seeds or jelly where we live. I'm curious to learn where to buy the seeds in NY. Sorry I don't have an answer for you :(
