From "The Associated Press Stylebook and Libel Manual" 1994 edition: "The Associated Press is a not-for-profit cooperative news service founded in 1848. It serves more than 1,700 newspapers and 6,000 broadcast members in the United States. AP services are printed and broadcast abroad by more than 8,500 subscribers in 112 countries. The news service, with headquarters in New York City, has 235 bureaus worldwide. It employs more than 3,000 full-time reporters, editors and photographers worldwide."
I learned in Journalism school that the first cooperative of journalists in the US was formed during World War I when reporting on overseas issues relied on a single telegraph wire strung from Europe to the US on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. Because not every newspaper could send a reporter overseas to cover the war, an association was formed to share the news amongst newspapers.
Newspapers etc. join the AP and are then entitled to run stories carried on the AP wire, and the AP picks up stories from their member newspapers to put on their wire.
