Cow's have large wide eyes. When humans see something appealing, our pupils tend to dilate and we open our eyes wide. This lead someone in lost history to quip "Stop making cow eyes at him." to some infatuated young woman.

(The last part was created for dramatic effect and may have no similarity to actual history. ;-) )

For those who didn't get it, the son thought the calf had run into the cow, and was stuck inside it. I thought it was pretty funny.
