Octopuses and squids move by "jet propulsion", sucking water into a muscular sac in the mantle cavity surrounding their bodies and quickly expelling it out a narrow siphon.
Both octopuses and squids are related to snails and other molluscs. Unlike snails, octopuses no longer have any remnant of a shell. Squids possess a stiff structure known as a pen, that acts as a flexible backbone.
Both squids and octopuses have blue blood! Their blood is this colour because they use an oxygen-carrying molecule in their blood that contains copper.
Octopuses and squids have hard, parrot-like beaks. These are excellent for killing, and tearing pieces of flesh from their prey.
Octopuses live in dens on the sea floor. Squids live in the open oceans.
Octopuses use their eight sucker-lined arms to capture their prey and move about on the ocean floor. Squids have eight arms lined with suckers and two specialized tentacles that they use to reach out and capture prey.
Octopuses eat bottom-dwelling crustaceans. Squids eatfishes and shrimps. Some deepwater squids may be scavengers.
Octopuses pierce the shells of their prey, injecting poison that causes paralysis. They then release salivary enzymes, loosening the meat from the inner shell. Squids use their two specialized tentacles to quickly reach out and capture fishes. They tear off bits of flesh and scrape the meat into their mouths with their beaks.

There are many differences and similarities between Octopus and Squid. Probably the most prominent difference between the two is, a squid has 8 arms and 2 tentacles-used for feeding wherea an octopus has only 8 arms. The mobility of the species is different as well. The squid is the most well adapted siwmmer using propulsion. The octopus generally does not use propulsion swimming unless feeling threatened. Each different species of octopus have differnet life spans. Some can be as short as a couple of months or others, like the giant Pacific Octopus can live 5 years.

A popular misconception is that squid have eight arms and two long tentacles, while octopus have eight arms and no tentacles. But this is not always the case. The only real difference between the two groups is that squid have hooked or saw-like suckers, and octopus do not.

An Octopus is a more social animal and often takes the time to spearhead community initatives. It's very outgoing and a big fan of Rammestein and can often be found at their gigs.
A squid however has bad BO and a penchant for exposing itself to fish and sea urchins. They generally smoke and have gambling addictions.

Both are without blood (and therefore eaten in Lent)
An octopus is much larger and has a round head and 8 legs
A squid has a long body with tentacles
Both can be eaten grilled or cooked in sauce (wine or tomato are both good)
A squid can be fried
Both have a rubbery feel and taste excellent.

A squid has whips and a bird-like beak. An octopus doesn't have whips or a beak, they have more like a sea star's mouth. Both are Cephalopods.
