Camille Paglia has a new book out called "Break, Blow, Burn" (the title is a reference to a Donne sonnet). In it, she collects various classic poems and writes about them. It's a considerably more engaging book than most poetry anthologies, which would be the other thing to look at. What you want is a book that will expose you to lots of different poets of different eras and styles and give you a sense of how to go about reading them.

Sample different poets from an anthology. "America's Favorite Poems" edited by Robert Pinsky could be an Anthology to start with ( the poems were chosen by Americans, but not necessarily by American poets). When you like a poem, note the poet and read more of his/her work. The more poetry you read, the more poems and poets you will enjoy.

Poetry is a very good thing to read.

It comes out from the heart and goes to your heart.

You are the one who best decide who to read first cos it really differs among ppl. cos your heart and the feelings inside of it differes from my heart and the feelings inside.

1 Learn about the different types of poetry
2 Find out which you like more OLD or MODERN
3 Read the poem many times cos every time you read it it will reveal a feeling that the poet tried to put in words.

Enjoy, Have a nice day..

Robert Frost, Walt Whitman, Kibran, Emily Dickenson, e.e. cummings....

If you're new to poetry, the best thing to do is to get a volume with a number of poets's work, and then you can decide who you'd like to explore further.
