Mid-summer it reaches 23 degrees above the horizon. This is the tilt of the Earth from the orbital plane. If there was no tilt, the sun would always be exactly on the horizon (0 degrees)

The height of the sun depends on the tilt of the Earth axis. 23.5 degrees is only an approximation. The actual tilt varies constantly
between about 22.1° to 24.5 degrees. One year it might be 23.254 degrees; many years later it might be 23.511 degrees. Many factors influence tilt including: precession, nutation, and Chandler Wobble. To find the max height of the sun this year you will have to check the current "Earth Orientation Parameters" at http://maia.usno.navy.mil

I love to guess at these questions, so here is my guesstimate, 7.5 degrees. Hey, it's a free two points! Thanks!
