Since you are going to Cape Town, try to go to Camps Bay. It is an awesome place with some of the most beautiful beaches. Along the main beachfront road, there is a place called Caprice that is worth checking out.
And make sure you vist the Victoria&Albert Waterfront - there's loads of great shops and restaurants there.

Try to go to Port Elizabeth as well. In my opinion, it has the best beaches in South Africa. There is a great place called Barneys on the beachfront where you can have great drinks while watching dolphins swim by in the ocean.

In Joburg, you can visit Sandton. It is probably one of the better places to go. It's got plenty of stuff to do.

You could also maybe make a stop in the capital city, Pretoria, which is about 50km North of Sandton. Whilst there you can visit the main student place-to-go: Hatfield. Although, it is likely to be a bit quiet in December since many people would be holidaying at coastal areas. There are two great restaurants in Hatfield that you should try out if you have the chance. Firstly there is Jose's (in Hilda street between Church and Pretorius Streets) and Pappa's (cnr of Duncan Road and South Street)

I would recommend getting yourself a map book (should be available at the airport) and renting a car (if you don't have someone driving you around). South Africa has good public roads and it's pretty easy to navigate yourself around. Just stick to the main roads though and avoid small, poorly lit roads.

By staying in public view and not acting like a confused tourist, you should be safe from crime. Stick to the places I've mentioned above and you should be fine.
If you ever need to stop and ask for directions, just stop at a petrol/gas station and ask there rather than stopping along the side of the road.

The answerer "Vicki" is a bit confused regarding South Africa. We have amongst the world's best drinking water (in the well-established cities that you are visiting) and it is not necessary to bring your own water.
And the "African people" probably won't "admire" your jewellary since they will probably wearing something impressive themselves - but again, don't go advertising the fact that you are wearing expensive stuff and keep your eyes open.

There is a big difference between South Africa and the rest of Africa. South Africa has plenty of first-world facilities all over the country that rank up there with the best in the world (of course there are third-world places as well which you can easily avoid)

Hope you enjoy your stay and go home with great memories!

There are many places that are worthwhile going to... here are some of them:
* In Cape Town area, the Table Mountain, the Waterfront and the Wine Route.
* The Garden Route with the Tsitsikamma National Park and the Cango Caves.
* The Wild Coast.
* Kwazulu-Natal, the Zululand and the Drakensberg range.
* Mpumalanga, the Kruger National Park and Sabi & Graskop.

Do not enter the big cities (except Cape Town) and you will be safe.

South Africa is great country to come visit. Lots of beatifull places. Just like any other country there are some high risk places. (Dont go into the townships or the CBD's of the big cities) Seeing its December gonna be very warm and make sure u have bookings at places to stay. If u pass Potch make sure u visit Bouron Street (nice pub) maybe a bit quiet seeing the students not here then.

It is totally no longer effortless to conquer England of their own outdoor, highly the present crew it truly is appearing to potential below the able coaching of Andy Flower and yet, South Africa has a crew that would do it provided it really is completely charged with Kallis and Steyn in good actual structure. little doubt it is going to be the try sequence to observe (and not in any respect the Ashes it truly is on the way as of now). My gut sense says South Africa will shake off its 'chokers' tag this time and get royally to the #a million rank and doubtless then be better conveniently waiting to stay there for good time. i imagine it really is better suited and larger aggressive cricket you'll wish to get if the proper 3-4 communities keep taking section in revolving chair with the respective ranks.... i'm prepared on the game first, then only of my united states of america's crew!!

Any questions regarding Cape Town... send me a message... I live here and it's AWESOME! Don't follow A. Garnet's advice. That crime website he's mentioning is totally flawed. I started a website against it: www.truecrimexpo.co.za which shows that that website is indeed biased and consits of many lies. Just follow basic precatautions and follow locals' advice etc. then you'll be 100%.

According to certain people, you will be killed within 10 seconds of stepping off your flight. They also suggest you go and visit some online version of Die Son (a popular sensationlist tabloid) called crime-something-or-the-other. We also apparently have a Marxist government wanting to kill all white people.

Me? I say you should forget about that and come and experience a beautiful country.

Yes, crime is a serious issue but South Africa is not the warzone some would have you believe. Take precautions as you would in any other country.

Keep yourself safe. Travel with a friend. Bring cooler clothes & mosquito repelant. December is summer. Just take the same security percautions that you would every day like not showing a camera or cell phone or that you have cash.

Just have fun - it gets hot in December, so pack accordingly. Lots of traffic on the roads and if you know your route, book your accommodation in advance, it is holiday season in SA and places get filled up soon and prices also go up, so do it early.

ENJOY your stay.
