Depends where you live. In the UK you can buy the antimalarials at a dispensing chemist. The current regime for the Dominican republic is Chloroquine, taken once a week. You start taking it one week before you go, once a week while you are away, and continue it for four weeks when you get home. You need to be checking with your doctor as offhand I can't remember which shots you need.

You can now buy malaria tablets directly from any pharmacist (UK), and they will be able to advise you which ones you need and when to take them. You do need to take them a couple of weeks before you go, so get down to the chemist now and get it sorted out sooner rather than later.

Been going to Dom Rep for 7yrs now, never used malaria tablets, but apply Jungle Formula in roll-on or spray between 5and 5.30pm,and then again before going out.
The good hotels keep your rooms sprayed, and we have never had a problem.
Have a GREAT time.

The tablets will tell you, usually start a couple of weeks before and continue for a couple of weeks after. However, they are a waste of time generally, it is best to take precautions against being bitten.
Larium is more effective, but can induce hallucinations, your doctor may even refuse to prescribe.

Would suspect you are going to the Dominican Republic because of its cheapness. It is a filthy place, the food is indifferent and health risks are great. The airport has come under severe criticism for its safety. You get what you pay for in everything.
