The Earth is an oblate sphere.
What is that? It is a sphere because it is mostly a huge ball of molten or semi molten iron that is in a state of free fall. Therefore, gravity pulls it into the shape of a sphere.
But it is also affected by other gravity related forces.
First, it is spinning about an axis. This spinning pulls the equatorial regions out slightly from the center and flattens the polar areas slightly.
Second, There is another gravity force nearby, the Moon, and the Earth is bulging a tiny bit toward and away from the Moon as it goes around the Earth. This tiny swell is hardly measurable on land, but in the oceans it raises the water level noticeably. This swell is called the tides.
So, the Earth's shape is dynamic. Basically a sphere, but with flattened poles, a fatter equatorial region, and a slight bulge that points at or away from the Moon.
;-D But what you see from outer space is just a sphere. It is a beautiful blue and white planet that is the only home we have. Take care of it.

Technically the shape of the earth is called a "GEOID". For layman it is egg shaped or oval. But the shape of the earth is unique and the only term suitable is GEOID !

It's sort of oval. It's not a perfect sphere. That's why different ends of the earth have different gravitational forces.

I was always told an oblate spheroid - a slightly flattened sphere (due to the effect of centrifugal force forcing the middle out slightly)
