The lifespans of all creatures (even humans) are encoded in the genes (DNA). During evolution, genes are selected for survival benefit. In the Wild it is likely that genes for fight or flight were more important than genes for longevity for many creatures. As creatures age they lose some of their fight or flight abilities and are removed from the gene pool by predators or perhaps pack leaders or stronger offspring claiming territory. Without good teeth, many can not feed or fight and herds flee leaving them behind. For survival of the species, it is necessary to last long enough to have offspring and nurture them until they are independent. Then the Devil take the hindmost. Man has been able to lengthen his/her average lifespan by fighting off predators including disease. More people last as long as their natural genes permit.
