I am moving out for the first time in the next few months.

I have easily enough money for rent and food with a few hundred pound left over each month. I am just wondering what other bills I need to keep tabs on and a rough idea on how much it will be?

Thanks!

For whoever mentioned needing to know from where to where - The flat I am looking at is in Dagenham, East London (yeah, its not the ritz but its near where I work and its not disgustingly expensive, so I cant complain).

Thanks!

check with your landlord first if they cover any bills for you, such as council tax, water rates, electricity etc

also ask if they require a deposit and how much

you'll probably have to pay:

*electricity - about £15 per month for one person
*gas - impossible to say how much as rates vary so much, probably around £20+ per month
*telephone - line rental and internet around £30 per month
*water - around £20 per month
*council tax - depends on size of property - check out their website
*TV license - about £10 per month I think

these are the basic ones.

without wanting to sound like a miserable cow, there's always unexpected costs when you live on your own, so make sure you have a small emergency fund (about £500) for unexpected bills, breakages etc

having said that, moving out for the first time is the most exciting thing ever so have a great time!!

One more thing - water rates, tv license and council tax are fixed, but for phone, gas and electric you can shop around for the best rates - try doing this on the internet before you move.

Provided that you must pay all bills (and its not inclusive with your rent)

Council Tax ( www.findaproperty.com has a council tax map on it so you can check how much it will be probably 30 -50 pounds a month)

Water - Ours is £160 annually (four bed House East london)

Gas/ Electric - depending how many people you have in the house normally about 20 quid a month

TV licence - I think this about £110 a year but you can pay with direct debit so its about 10 pounds a month

Phone bill/ Broadband - You may not need a phone as most people use mobiles but you prob will need the net if you get a really good pack age this will prob cost about 15 - 20 pounds a month

Travel - Zone 1 - 3 weekly travelcard £26

I live in the US, so it will be a little different.
Since you are online, I'm assuming you will want internet, so it will cost that, and maybe a deposit, depending on what company you go through. You will want TV, don't know if that is a factor there, but you will have to pay the first months bill for that plus a deposit, price depends on how good your credit is. You will have to pay electic, phone, water and all of those will take the first months payment plus a deposit. i know when I moved out on my own, it was sorta pricy the first month, it was everythings first bill doubled pretty much. The first month will be tight, but after that it will taper off and be worth it. Good luck and congrats on the new place.

Council Tax - £1000 per year approx.
Fuel ( Gas, Electricity ) cost depends on useage, say £100 per month for a 3 bed semi.
Clothes.
Insurances.
Travel. ( Bus / train fares, car road tax, car insurance, car repairs and fuel. )
Medical ( Dentist, prescriptions )
TV licence.
The unexpected! ( Getting burgled, fire, flood, hospitalised etc.)

Is the rented accommodation furnished or unfurnished?
If unfurnished, then you'll have to buy furniture etc.

Just think that everything you get from your parents will now cost you personally.

Do not be tempted by store cards, credit cards, loans etc. unless you are disciplined enough to pay the balances off completely every month. This is the biggest mistake you will make if you don't.

Don't forget to add transportation and entertainment to all of the above. If you drive your own car, there will also be the cost of insurance, gas, and car repairs. You might even have to go the extent of paying for parking, if you are going to be moving into a downtown flat where parking space is at a premium.

It looks like most stuff has been covered, however I would urge you to consider renters insurance if you can afford it, It seems like a waste of money, but it recently saved me having to fork out £1200 for a mountain bike that was stolen
