Just wondering - why is it so important for gay actors to remain closeted? Would it really have such a bad impact on their careers if they were to 'out' themselves? I simply don't get it!

The entertainment industry as a whole is famously oversubscribed. The often quoted statistics revealling that 90% of actors are out of work at any time are probably over optimistic. This means that as an actor you are battling to sell yourself daily. It's not just a question of "getting the part" - half the battle is actually being seen for an audition, or even persuading your agent to put you up for an auditon! So whilst there continues to exist in the world the slightest prejudice, wouldn't YOU keep it to yourself? Why would you do anything to jepoardise your already slim chances?

Being gay as an actor has no more relevance than your political or religious beliefs. If a casting director is looking for someone to play the part of a gay man, they would be guilty of discrimination if they auditioned only gay actors. By the same token, if they were casting the part of a murderer, they wouldn't just audition convicted killers... So if your sexuality is irrelevant to what you do, why broadcast it? It's no one else's business and it has nothing to do with your ability to do your job. Actors act. That's the whole point. (I do find it hilarious though, when I hear hetrosexual actors say they wont even consider playing a gay role - yet they have no problem playing wifebeaters and serial killers! Some straight men are so insecure, bless them.)

What you will generally find in the media is that an actor who is comfortable with, but does not make an enormous deal about his sexuality, will be left alone by the press. There is no story in a happy gay actor - the tabloids are only interested in scandal. Everyone knows who's gay and who isn't in the industry - it's only news when there's a juicy story attached. Like when the individual in question is married, or has staunchly denied being gay in the past. Narcotics are the same - I guarantee most of your tv favourites do drus at some point, but so long as they dont fall out of a club in a very public display in the early hours of the morning, or fall asleep in their car (!) there's no story in it.

At the end of the day, whilst it's true that it could be damaging to an actors career to be "outed" (casting directors can be very unimaginative sometimes, and you could end up only being offered gay roles...) I think what's more to the point is - It's no one else's business - so unless they are desperate to be on the front page of The Sun, why would they "out" themselves?

Gay actors work for (and so are paid by) people with all kinds of political, social and sexual viewpoints so simple econimics says that they would not be wise to limit their own appeal to politically correct liberal minded people. It is an economic decision, not a moral one.
