There were three propounders of Hindu philosophy in three different schools of throught.

Adi Sankaracharya. Propounded "Advaitam". This means that "Paramathma" and "Athma" are one and the same. Both of them are within you.

Sri Ramanyja. Propounded "Vishshtadvaitam". This mean that although and "Paramathma" and "Athma" are one and the same, to achieve this end you need a "Acharya". Sri Ramanuja had 94 "shishyas" and each one of them have their own "shishyas" following this path.

Sri Madhvacharya. Propounded "Dvaitam". This means "Parmathma" and "Athma" are different. He established around 6 mutts. The followers of Sri Madhavacharya are called "Madhvas".
