Nothing displays on the scren and the computer doesnt do any thing. We've tested the screen and its no to do with that can any one help accertain what may be wrong?

you obviously have power going to your laptop otherwise the power light wouldn't come on, but if this is as far as the power is getting then you have a problem with the circuit board which is stopping the power from getting any further. It could be a faulty component, or a dry solder joint, or something else quite simple but you will have to send it off for someone qualified to have a look and test the circuit properly.

Is it a Sony Vaio? They do this. Try switching it off and back on again. I'm trying to write my thesis on one and am obsessive about backing it up.

Does it "sound" like it's booting up? If not, it could mean your fan is kaput.

Could be your battery is knackered.

please check the fan on the laptop,
if that is not working then you need to have this fix
