because it revealed that communism worked.
despite the endless propaganda, we've come to see this:
1) the human rights experience in cuba is no worse than the human rights experience anywhere else in the caribbean or latin america (alas for all.)
2)cubans have the highest standard of living in the carribean.
3) cubans have the best medical system in all of latin america and are training and exporting doctors to the whole region.

3rd answerer cassandra made some good points.
The word "communism" instils fear in America almost like the word "witches" - those who engaged in it in the US were once upon a time hunted down, imprisoned / killed. So much so that communism today is still taboo, perceived negatively in the mindsets of Americans so used to enjoying the fruits of democracy. Communism works for certain countries even now and "instant democracy" a la Iraq, Afghanistan cannot succeed.
Communism prevailed in Cuba because Fidel Castro aligned with the USSR during the Cold War period; with such an awesome ally on Cuba's side, past US Presidents especially had to balance their foreign policies and tread cautiously with an enemy so close to mainland America - therein lies the frustration.

It goes back to the Cold War, and the idea of having a Communist Country, Soviet Ally right in our backyard.
