"Binkies" help with the security of newborns up to a certain age. Its up to you. My son had one in his mouth the day he was born. Binkies do not help with the teeth development so you may want to think it over.

I would use the binky as a last resort and try some other means of comfort. Babies cry to communicate, its natural. hold your baby and love your baby and your baby will feel the security. Nursing with breast milk should help too. Good luck!!!

it's ok when they're very young

however these should be discontinued as soon as possible, because they have all kinds of negatives:
- retards acquisition of speech, by making it more difficult / impossible to produce some sounds (try speaking w an adult-sized one in your mouth!)
- is bad for breathing. Among other things, with something big always in your mouth, some of the air will enter through the mouth. This is not the favoured way, our bodies work best when air is breathed / heated / cleaned through the nose. Encouraging through the mouth breathing will increase sensitivity to colds, and may have lasting negative effects

- worse of all, when these things are used after the baby has had his/her first teeth, they tend to push the teeth forward, and into the bone. The forward bit can later be corrected of course (and you could argue that these are non-permanent teeth, so who cares). But in extreme cases the jawbones themselves take a (negative) rounded shape, resulting in kids who display an elliptical opening between their teeth with a mouth closed. Once stabilised this can NEVER be corrected, because it will be bone that was not allowed to grow as planned

So, please, continue NOT using these!

i never used one on my child due to the fact of how dirty they can get falling on the ground and rumors of how it can affect the child's teeth when they come in. If your baby is crying, there is a reason. Could be colic, diaper rash, boredom, or hunger or pain. Find out what is bugging him/her and take care of it. Babies are little humans just like us and crying is their way of relating to us.

And I think it can delay a child's talk in my opinion. My son was extremely articulate for his age. He was talking way ahead of the rest of the children his age.

It is more than ok to use a "pacifier" to help calm the baby. It will not in any way harm the child or their ability to talk. One of my children used one and the other did not and they both developed normally.
