I dropped a heavy mirror (with sharp edges) on my foot yesterday and the bleeding was insane, it soaked several dressings. The cut is very deep, but bizarrely it doesn't hurt at all.

Have I severed a nerve? Will that cause me any problems in the future?

Thanks guys, it seems a little bruised now, but it's healing and I can move it just fine.

I was really just wondering how you can have a cut that bleeds a lot but isn't painful. It's pretty unusual.

Thanks to whoever accused me of being insane and making it all up - I'm 27, not 12, but thanks for your helpful advice ;-)

You fool, what were you doing lifting a mirror?? That besides, yeah Ive noticed that the few big cuts Ive gotten through my crafting dont hurt, think because there are lots of nerve endings right in the skin and not so much further down. But science aside, go to the docs because a cut that deep might need stitches. and no more heavy lifting! Good luck x

It could be anything from mild state of shock to a severed nerve. In either case, you should have a doctor look at it. Worst case scenario is damage to your nervous system and that could get very bad for you in the future. Best case scenario is you cut your foot and it needs more gauze. Do you really want to be worrying about it?

oh no. You cut a nerve. Nerves are the only thing in the body that cannot heal once they have been damaged. The impulse routes can be redirected, but not always, and never to restore full feeling. See a doc.

If u aint had it seen to yet, soak it in warm boiled salt water
(not boiling water, let the water cool down so its warm)
put some salt in swirl it around and soak your foot in it for about half hour and straight away seek medical advice! the salt water is for infections!! it wont hurt at all. :o) hope you are ok

Sometimes if you have cut yourself really deeply the wound will cauterise and it doesn't hurt as much as only partially severed nerves. Or you may have poor circulation.

You need to get it seen to. It does probably mean you have severed the nerve.
