The main justification for Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum (RVSM) Airspace appears to be accommodation of increased traffic volume and the desire for fuel economy. (See ref.) In certain areas it reduces the minimum vertical separation to 1000 feet at high altitudes, allowing more traffic to access fuel-saving high-altitude cruise.
