I have operated a " treadle" type potters wheel with bare feet when it has been very hot and humid - no safety issue with that particular wheel because the treadle is well above the rotating counterweight disk.
However, I certainly would not operate a "kick" wheel (where you actually kick the disk) without good heavy shoes.
I only used an electric wheel for a short while (wearing shoes) - felt I had a more intuitive control of the throwing speed using a non-electric wheel.

To operate a potters wheel in bear feet,it is best not to catch your claws in the pedals; also, after a while, bits of bear hair gum up the 'bearings'. A little honey will ease this problem, carefully applied with a spoon.......................Winnie the Pooh

No, I would not recommend having bare feet while throwing. One reason is safety. That wheel can spin pretty fast, and if you catch your toe it will really hurt. Also, you will have better traction with shoes on.

I'm sure you meant bare feet. No I wouldn't recommend that at all...if you're throwing stoneware those little sharp pieces will make a mess of your soles, not to mention digging all that dried clay from under your toenails.

Perhaps without any shoes on... but generally the bears get very aggitated if you take their feet... espically the Grizzlys...
