From a male's perspective, I think they're much more accepting of bisexual women than bisexual men (who are just gay...bla, bla, bla). However, we get lambasted from the ignorant on both sides. Overall though, I wouldn't think it is any more biphobic than it is homophobic. It's just that those who are are so vociferous.

Society will accept homosexuality before it accept Bisexuals. Because most of the homosexuals are the worst biphobes out there.

Bisexuals have a very difficult time in society, because society appears to only have two different types of community - the heterosexual and homosexual community. Bisexuals don't have their own visible community, and hence fall into something which most people can't categorize - like people who are biracial. People tend to feel threatened by those they can't categorize, and hence why bisexuals have a difficult time in public.
Unfortunately, a lot of biphobia comes from the gay community. This can stem from insecurity, misunderstanding and also because the bisexual operates in a "different language" to a homosexual. In addition, there are some troubled homosexuals who are jealous or frightened of those who can "choose" to live a heterosexual lifestyle.
Whilst some bisexuals may be able to "choose" the heterosexual route, there are those who feel hurt at the thought of denying a part of their sexuality.

Yeah, I think society is pretty biphobic. Even many gays and lesbians don't want to date bi people because of the stereotype that they'll eventually leave them for someone of the opposite sex.
There are some people who are truly bisexual. I accept these people because they give the same opportunity to everyone for affection. But then, there are the little twits (mostly girls) who pretend to be bi just to attract boys. There are also the snotty little boys who think it's great to be with a bisexual woman because they think it'll get them a threesome. *eyeroll*

I think it's kinda biphobic (which is a nifty word... is it even a real word?). When I was younger, I told everyone I was bisexual; I was confused and didn't know which way I swung. I was constantly told that I had to choose one or the other, that I couldnt REALLY go for both.
No one wants to think that anyone can want it both ways, cuz that's just too many variables in the equation. "Wait, you're saying that there are now ppl who like their own gender and... more ppl who like both? That's not possible man!"
heheh

Not too accepting. You can be bisexual and monogamous. Granted, it's not always easy, and you do have to work at it to make it successful. You can't help but think, god it's been a long time, and this isn't really what I'm in the mood for tonight. But you can be committed and be bisexual.
I think society as a whole feels that bisexuality is a resting post on the way to homosexuality. "Bi now, gay later" as they say. I don't think this is true. You really aren't accepted in the gay community, or in the straight community.

Still fairly phobic I think, or ignorant. In gay pubs, seeing people of opposite sex kissing, they are assumed to be heterosexual and are treated as such. Even if it is know that they are bisexual, it is still treated with resentment.
In the straight world people think bisexuals will shag anything, and take part in threesomes.
I think it is getting better with time.
Update: new terms:
People who aren't really bisexual, and just want to "try" homosexuality (or, indeed, heterosexuality) can be called try-bi's, or trysexual. I probably fall into this category as I'm curious about men but haven't taken the plunge yet.
But I've met plenty of real bisexuals. I don't know why people find it surprising that they fancy people of both sexes.

Bisexuality in women is pretty socially acceptable because heterosexual men find that a turn on.
Bisexuals are always going to have a struggle because both heterosexuals and homosexuals find it threatening. Humans are more comfortable when they can define a person. Bisexuals are confusing to them because they are solidly attracted to a particular gender and just don't get it.

I don't think there's been an intelligent answer to this question, yet!
I AM BISEXUAL. No, I don't think society is very accepting. Like the woman above me ( Mego, or IS IT a woman??), most of the rest of society thinks we should make up our minds and just choose one or the other. Like being gay, it's not a choice. I have a fiancee and a girlfriend. Both of them get along just fine and neither cares if I happen to be in the mood for him one night and her the next. So it's a mini-herem, so what? What the heck do you care what happens in my bedroom and why are you glaring through your binoculars, you "Peeping Tom"?!

Society may not accept bisexuality out in the open but I believe it has become more liberated and open minded about it.
