The breasts are covered by skin; each breast has one nipple surrounded by the areola. The areola is colored from pink to dark brown, hairless, and has several sebaceous glands. The larger mammary glands within the breast produce the milk; they consist of several lobules, and each breast has some 10-20 lactiferous ducts that drain milk from the lobules to the nipple, where each duct has its own opening,
Most of the breast is connective tissue, i.e., adipose tissue (fat) and Cooper's ligaments. The breasts sit over the pectoralis major muscle and usually extend from the level of the 2nd rib to the level of the 6th rib anteriorly. The superior lateral quadrant of the breast extends diagonally upwards in an 'axillary tail'. A thin layer of mammary tissue extends from the clavicle above to the seventh or eighth ribs below and from the midline to the edge of the latissimus dorsi posteriorly.
The arterial blood supply to the breasts is derived from the internal thoracic artery (previously referred to as the internal mammary artery), lateral thoracic artery, thoracoacromial artery, and posterior intercostal arteries. The venous drainage of the breast is mainly to the axillary vein, but there is some drainage to the internal thoracic vein and the intercostal veins.
The breast is innervated by the anterior and lateral cutaneous branches of the 4th through 6th intercostal nerves. The nipple is supplied by the T4 dermatome.
Both sexes have a large concentration of blood vessels and nerves in their nipples.

They are composed primarily of fat and have a lot of blood vessels running through. Most importantly, the breasts, not only of a woman, but also of any female mammal, house 'mammary glands', whose function is to generate milk to feed the offspring after birth. Milk is the only food the newborn can digest and contains all the nutrients essential to its healthy growth.

Genes do decide the shape and size of breasts. However, in order to serve its basic function of providing an easily accessible, liquid-food source for the baby, a healthy breast is an approximately dome-shaped structure with a soft, extended nipple which enables even the newborn with its weak lips to suckle easily and gather sustenance.

The female breast is designed to provide optimal nourishment for babies and to provide sexual pleasure for the woman herself.

The breasts are glandular organs that are very sensitive to hormonal changes in the body; they undergo cyclic changes in synchrony with the menstrual cycle. They are very intimately connected with the female genital system. Nipple stimulation increases prolactin secretion from the pituitary gland. This hormone also affects the uterus and can cause contractions.

Breast tissue extends up into the armpit (axilla), in what is known as the tail of Spence. Lymph nodes that drain the breast tissue are also located in the armpits. After a woman has had a baby and her milk comes in, she may develop striking swellings under her arms from engorgement of the breast tissue in that area. Breasts come in all sizes and shapes, as do nipples, and most women’s breasts are slightly asymmetrical.
