As others have said I too will say :
To distinguish you need to have a distinguisher.
To have a distinguisher the distinguisher should be different from the "thing" being distinguished.
If there is no distinguisher then who will distinguish, so nothing can be distinguished.
So this distinguisher is the "criteria of self to distinghish things".
I just proved nothing can be distinguished without the criteria of self to distinguish things.
Simply put when something is distinguished it is based on some criteria. If you go to the basic criteria (root criteria) then you reach a common set of criteria that define a self.
Without which it is not possible to distinguish things based on the instances or derivatives of those "criteria of self".
How does one distinguish things ?
They are always based on some basic criteria, the ones
that make ones frame of thinking and analyzing.
Hence without that frame the distinguishing process will simply break down.
So criteria of distinguishing are required.
Since mind and brain can not function logically and properly
without these.
Hence noting can be distinguished without the criteria of self to distinguish things.

This question shouldn't be in Science...it should be in religion. That's the root of all religions, when you figure out that there's nothing without the 'you' or the ego, you apparently transcend this reality, or so says Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity (some denominations, not the Roman Catholic), and some others...I forget..hehe.

Because we have to have a firm basis to understand what is going on. And we need to know the barriers and limitations of the question.
