because by the time everyone has put a parachute on and queued up at the door to jump the plane would already be in the sea. Lifejackets are more pratical for a large plane as the pilot would ditch the plane in the sea. there would then be enough time before the plane sank to get everyone out of the plane into the water with their lifejackets on and ready to wait for rescue.

The last place you want to be is in the water!!!!!

"Cold water robs the body's heat 32 times faster than cold air. If you should fall into the water, all efforts should be given to getting out of the water by the fastest means possible."

Expected Survival Time in Cold Water

Water Temperature / Unconsciousness / Expected Survival Time

70–80° F (21–27° C)/ 3–12 hours / 3 hours – indefinitely

60–70° F (16–21° C) / 2–7 hours / 2–40 hours

50–60° F (10–16° C) / 1–2 hours / 1–6 hours

40–50° F (4–10° C) / 30–60 minutes / 1–3 hours

32.5–40° F (0–44° C) / 15–30 minutes / 30–90 minutes

<32° F (<0° C) / Under 15 minutes / Under 15–45 minutes

Life jackets are cheap and useless, parachutes are costly and useless.
I don't see either one being of much help if your plane is going down.

I used to fly aerobatics in a 2 seater plane (a T-6) and I wore a parachute as per FAA rules. I just read that last year the exact plane I flew crashed and 2 people died. Both had on parachutes but it didn't help them when the wing snapped off and the plane crashed.

By the way the force of the plane hitting water is the same as hitting land. Have you ever seen a big plane make a "safe" landing on the water? Nope, they hit the water and breakup just like hitting land.

If a plane door was opened during an emergency in order to let people escape via parachute, everybody would just be sucked out due to air pressure. People would be killed by this, or if not killed, heavily injured. If the plane crashes in an ocean however, the doors can be safely opened and people can put the lifejackets to use.

There would not be time to get people off the plane in the event of a disaster. Plus, commercial airliners fly so high that anyone exiting from them would die due to lack of air, cold etc. Parachute drops occur at much lower altitudes.

You are more likely to crash over water - if you crash on land, and the plane survives realtively intact, you should be ok. If in water and the plane survives, you will need a flotation. Hence life jackets.

Neither lifejackets nor parachutes are much use really. They would be far more likely to save people's lives if they fitted each seat with a drop-down smoke hood. More lives are lost through fires on aircraft than through crashing.

Because it takes less time to train someone to use a lifejacket than it does to train them to use a parachute without killing themselves in the process.

I guesse it's because it would take too long to explain to all the people how to use a parachute! It's much easier to put a life jacket on you and chuck you out of the plane hoping you hit water :)

you need to know how to put on a parachute, how to tie your harness on, and when to pull the zip. also, too many people near eachother pulling out parachutes while in the air... they'll get tangled up and die anyway. landing is also hard, if you've never done it before. even though you were floating down, you sure hit the ground hard.

do you know how to use a life preserver? it's easy. you put it on. you dont' need to do anything else. if you land upside-down? you'll be top heavy, and your head will still be above the surface even if you're unconscious.

there is more water than land on earth's surface

coz it gives the flight attendants time to prepare.the first thing everyone on the plain is asked to do is put on their life jackets which gives the attendants at least ten minutes before everyone starts really panicing, meanwhile ythey hook up the oxygen tanks for the masks, the passengers put on the masks, the oxygen doesnt actually help people breath it gets u high.like in the dentist, which gives u a false state of euphoria, and ur calm...u accept your faith...the flight attendants have less hassle to deal with, where as with parachutes there would be panic and chaos
