Rat's are opportunist squatters....which is why they, along with the cockroaches, will out live humans.

Assuming you are talking about wild rats, most of them tend to live in human made structures, simply because we have made them so readily available. Attics, basements, plumbing, barns, etc can make great rat homes.
If a structure such as those is not available, most wild rats will dig burrows.

They tend to live in my basement crawl space. I have to keep a supply of rat poison all the time.

They live everywhere, especially in my entire neighborhood...they live in our garages. We hear them dance on the roof and we see the traps snapped in the morning, but no dead rat :( I saw a dead one the other day, and it was in front of a restaurant. So, yes, they live everywhere.
