Marriage is an old social custom that solved several problems in society. These were many, but mainly how to pass accumulated wealth to the younger generation - so as to limit feuding and bloodshed when the owner died. In some cultures wealth was handed down through the female line and in others through the male line. In order to do this, the children's patronage or matronage had to be identified. Children were legally linked by marriage to their fathers and mothers. Children not legally linked to their parents were not eligible for inheritance once the owner died. These children are called bastards. Traveling merchants in France often used their packsaddles as beds in the roadside inns. When they slept with the innkeeper's daughter, the child was called a 'son of the packsaddle' or 'fils de bast.' Which became bastard in English.
Of course the legitimate children would not want the bastard to inherit any of the families wealth. Without marriage, there would be a claim by any and all children to the family fortune.
So the functions of a marriage are legalistic in nature, and vary by country and tradition.
To use the word dysfunctional and link it to marriage is to move to another area of society, life of the family within a marriage. It is not about the legal aspects of a marriage, but instead, the personal relationships within the marriage itself. These relationships include the traditional family members, depending on the differences within counties and social classes. These might be those of the traditional family which can be defined as a householder and one or more other persons living in the same household who are related to the householder by birth, marriage, or adoption. Or one of the other 20 or so definitions in use today.
But dysfunctional means that the relationships are not working. The duties and responsibilities of each family member are not being carried out. The relationships are failing to provide an environment in which the family members can live a happy life.
;-D Marriage does not automatically provide the dysfunctions. People do that all by themselves.

It depends on the people. Some people were just made for each other. Marriage is a partnership between a man and a woman who love one another.
As for dysfunction, you have to get used to your mate's personality and traits. Sometimes this might break up a marriage. If you can't take it after you're married and find out what they are really like then you're in trouble.

Dysfunctions: Fighting in public, fighting in private, jealous rages, cheating, lack of sexual intimacy, control of the others career, shall I keep going on? May I suggest the classic movie "War of the Roses".

These two statements indicate what side of the fence you are on so it is a loaded question. A favourite trick of partisan researchers trying to get the results they want from a survey: "Push for the legalization of drugs like marijuana, MDMA, and psychedelics. Glorify irresponsible drug use in every media outlet possible, just not drug abuse. *Drug dealers should have more lenient penalties if they are arrested." Loaded questions evoke emotional responses and skew results.
