All indicators are either weak acids or weak bases dissolved in buffer solutions.

Acids are sour to taste and they change blue litmus to red. Bases are soapy to touch and they change red litmus to blue.Acids are formed when non metallic oxides react with water while bases are formed when metallic oxides react with water. But all the acid-base indicators are neither acid nor alkali themselves as they don't hold that property.
