Aye your battery as gone flat.when its been on hold it still uses power. take your battery out for a sec or 2 then put it back in and charge. it will work fine after that.

I'm not 100% what you mean by "hold" but iPods do use some power while they are on standby but not that much, i can leave mine for many days without really noticing any change in the available battery charge.

To minimise the amount of energy your iPod uses while you have it on standby stop playing any music and press and hold the play/pause button on the click wheel, this will turn your iPod off there and then. Then don't forget to lock the keypad so you don't knock the click wheel again (thus turning the iPod back on).

when you are about to stop using it at night.. set it to sleep for say; 10 minutes... and it will turn itself off... why don't you use it on electric at home?... then it's always fully charged for when you go out....(you can listen to it while it charges).... x
