This could be one of two things:
1. The innate immune response is the first phase. This phase is characterised by the recognisition of foreign organisms (e.g. viruses or bacteria) by immune cells such as dendritic cells and macrophages. These cells injest micro-organisms and activate other immune cells.
The adaptive immune response is the second phase. This involves activation of T and B lymphocytes. T cells destroy infected cells, while B cells produce antibodies against invading microbes. The immune system stores these activated cells in lymph nodes in case the body is infected ata later time. This is known as immune memory.
2. The otehr answer could be the primary and secondary immune responses. The primary immune response occurs when the body is infected with a microbe for the first time, while the seondary immune response relies on immune memory to previously encountered microbes. The secondary immune response is utilised when you are vaccinated against a pathogen.
