As far as conspiracy theories go, the theory that 9/11 was actually concieved and executed by the American government is a VERY intriguing one. But think for a moment.... If the government really WAS behind such a horrific event, how would the rumor of their involvement ever see the light of day? The American government is the most powerful on the face of the planet, and now has the ability to tap into any phone conversation and e-mail, right? If they really WERE behind it, how would they ever let rumors of it even begin to circulate? I would think that the moment the idea was first posted/talked about, the government would completely destroy all traces of the remark, and have a federal agent hunt the person down and kill him within minutes (under the assumtion, that is, that the government truly has become as facist as people make it out to be) to prevent the theory from gathering momentum.
If 9/11 WAS done by the government, there's no way anyone would ever think about it.

I would agree that it can't be true, at least not in the way the conspiracy buffs tell it, but for the opposite reason from yours. I do not believe the government has that much control over what people think and say. On the contrary, if it was really engineered by the government, it would be a whole lot more than crank rumors that we would hear. The kind of money the media has to throw around, someone would have sold their story about it by now. The physical evidence would exist; there would be plenty of scope for investigative reporting, and it would all come out. Consider Watergate.
However, I do think it is true that the US government, and especially intelligence agencies, have been involved in some of the same people as Bin Laden, perhaps even himself. There is some talk that he got US aid money years ago for some reason.
Our government has a lot of fingers in a lot of pies, but there's only so much they can do to keep an operation secret. They know that, and would never work so directly to do something so evil. That they may indeed have set some of the forces in motion which produced the evil we experienced on 9/11/01 is no big surprise, however.
Also, there is no denying they are capable of manipulating any event to their advantage, as in pushing through unconstitutional "security" measures in reaction to the events of 9/11/01. It would not surprise me if those measures were already formulated in the minds of certain big wigs, waiting only for a useful panic (whether or not nudged into existence) to implement them. They happened too fast to be altogether impromptu.

The government cannot yet monitor the thoughts and investigations and opinions of all the people all of the time. From the very start, some people around the world questioned 9/11, blaming it on the Israelis (Mossad, which is plausible), and also many people investigated the physics of the tower collapses. There's no way a suspicion, a murmur could have been squashed. Under your scenario, it's not just one person who'd have had to have been killed by the government, but probably thousands, if not millions, and any such killings would have verified the idea that the government did it and tried to cover up.
The hypothesis that the government did it may very well not be true--but not for the reasons you give. You need to think through your idea again and you'll see that it's absurd.

Well.. Conspiracy theories are modern folklore.. Like urban legends.
I personally don't think that 9/11 actually was US Governments fault.. At least not directly..
But I'm quite sure that in some state of the history USA's been supporting (Weapons, ammos and military training) so many different groups that it's not a miracle if taleban and al what's-it's-name are using weapons provided by US army..
Just a thought..

Not even Mao was that powerful. Remember Tien An Men Square?
He had access over chinese Internet, the police under command, every reporter and filmmaker under his thumb. Nothing escaped Beijing, well, nothing except the few scaps of information that we have today. And the Chinese government STILL denies the "incident," even after the death of thousands.
[Pfft, great job Mao.]
So, even though he had this WHOLE country under control, stuff still leaked.
That's why Bush can't possibly do that, because he's new and inexperienced, not to mention a complete idiot.
If The U.S really was behind it, there would be no way they could possibly contain that sort of information.
He's a war monger, and the people just don't trust him.

Nothing will convince them otherwise. They love reading all the conspiracy garbage.
If there was any inkling of truth to the conspiracies, there would be an ongoing investigation by top journalists not just a few nutcases on the internet.
