This is a difficult question to answer. See, the colonies declared their independece with the Declaration of Independence dated July 4,1776. However, some will argue that without a constitution or charter for the country it wasn't really a country. The Constitution was not ratified until 1788. Even then one can argue it wasn't really ratified until the Bill of Rights was added in 1789.

So, when were we first officially labelled or referred to as the USofA?
"In Congress. July 4, 1776
The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America" opens the Declaration.

When were we first considered legally a country? Some define an independent nation-state as a country with a constitution or set of laws; and that didn't happen until the Constitution.

So, sorry, but pick your answer depending upon your definition.
