I think the Jack the Ripper murders were really fascinating in that there were so many suspects, very little the police did to investigate and so many books written about it.
There are also some that have been solved, such as the Manson Murders, but the facts are really twisted and just plain scary.
Or what about the Amityville Horror story. Not all the crap that came later - but the original story.
I guess it really depends on what kind of murder mystery you are interested in - there are the unsolved cases, the serial murderers, the super natural. There is information all over the web about all of them.

Wow, a writer after my own heart. I love to take true stories and twist them into a work of fiction. That's why I enjoy Yahoo Answers so much. I can't think of anything off hand, except might I suggest you read some of Ann Rule's books...perhaps that will get you started. I'm sure you've read her, but the books are wonderful....you can possibly take some things from several stories and make your own. Of course I'm not suggesting you steal from her, but just the basic concept.
