Take plenty of photos of him with family and friends. That way you don't need to worry about the fact he won't remember a thing about it.

Lots of colors, cake, family and friends. Pictures and video will be fun for him to look back on, but he's not going to remember it. I bought my daughter a stuffed bear and a cake of her own. She played in it and laughed and smiled for the camera. Put down plastic or something on the floor under the high chair... messy messy messy! Just remember, the first couple birthday parties are for the parents... after 3 or so, it's for the kid.

something we did at my cousins first birthday that was cute:
There were other little children there and we took tons of pictures, and had them draw some. We took the pictures they drew and the photos and later put it in a "time capsule" along with a napkin and plate *if its a theme party* You can open it with him on a later birthday since hes too young to remember it now. Plus you'll get a kick out of the cake on his face later on too. Fun and something you can keep for some good memories.

Dont go overboard, he wont know what it's all about, nor remember it.
However, it's a WONDERFUL DAY for you !!! You made it thru the 1st year! What a milestone!!! CELEBRATE !!! Invite family and a few close friends to a nice dinner party -- Birthday Party! Get some ballons for your mailbox. Get a card from: Mommy & Daddy !!! Buy a Nice Cake & Ice Cream and dress him up. Have a wonderful time & dont forget lots of fotos -- have everyone bring a camera or supply disposable cameras for everyone!! Congatulations to you & yours !!!!

Here's an idea, short and sweet.
Make a cake for everyone, and make a cake just for him. Sit him down with the cake and let him dig in, all to himself. Everyone can sit around and watch and take lots of funny pictures.
I know some other people have suggested it, and to me that's the best part of the first birthday.

Lots and Lots of balloons kids love balloons. Get him his own personal cake so that he can go buck wild with it and not have to share with others, it's funny how messy they get with it or he could be like my daughter was on her first B-Day and was scared of the cake or even when she got a little on her but now she is all over it. Just make it all about him and have fun with it.

sorry to cut to the quick, but really this is a memory for you and your family. your son won't remember it. when my nephew turned 1 there was only family on both sides there, cake and snack food. i wouldn't make a huge deal out of a birthday till say 5 or older then they will remember it. make sure though for the part where he eats his first b-day cake, he has a small one to himself to dig into, have a seperate one for the rest of the guests.
