First and foremost... BE EXTREMELY CAUTIOUS!!! - Make 100% sure you know what you are doing, and use only recommended update flash app. as supplied on your mother board's manufacturers site.
Few things to KNOW before you start:
1.) Motherboard Manufacturer
2.) Motherboard Model Number
3.) BIOS ID STRING (Displayed when you boot-up at bottom of screen).
4.) Why you need to update... Don't just do an update unless you are really really 100% sure that this is necessary!!!!!
5.) UNDERSTAND: If you make a mistake... Bye Bye Motherboard!
6.) Make sure you have a virus free boot-up stiffy. Preferably one that has the flash program as well as the update saved on it.
7.) Make sure you have an Un-interruptible Power Supply that is providing your computer with adequate capacity to support your PC for at least 20 minutes in case of a power failure!!!!.
8.) Use a good diagnostic application to ID your motherboard, if your aren't 100% sure, like available from websites like "http:\\www.driverguide.com".
9.) Remember to make a back-up of your BIOS BEFORE you flash it...
10.) If you need any more help pls contact me, I will help where I can - don't worry I won't charge you anything - I do this as a hobby, not for income.

BIOS firmware or BIOS setting?
Visit your manufacturer's website for the former, your local helpdesk technician for the latter. You have to hit a certain key sequence at startup to access the BIOS. Some vendors use the del key, some ESC, some F1, F10 and so on. So i recommend you visit the website for more accurate information.
All the best!

Your question is very vague. What exactly do u want to do. You don't upgrade bios setting - bios setting tell the process about your hardwares (non plug and play) so how do u want to upgrade it.

If you want to upgrade your BIOS, don't do it while the computer is working properly. You won't notice any increase in the computer's performance.
