You should change your oil AND filter every 3,000 miles (more often if you drive on dirt roads) or, if you don't drive it very often, at least twice a year (alternating hot and cold weather will accelerate oil break down through condensation). Of course, a dirty oil filter will not let oil circulate very well, the filter should be changed at the same time the oil is changed, else you will still have dirty oil. Dirty oil gets sludgy and then it can't circulate very well. If you wait too long between oil changes, this built up sludge will come loose all at once and plug up the oil pump suction screen (big trouble then). The longer you wait, the bigger the problems.
