Will be taking the holiday in Nov, wanting to stay in Cape town for around 3 days.Hoping to take an overnight Safari and spend time in plenty of places to entertain a 9 year old,any help would be gratfully recieved as this is our first time to S.A. (cant wait).

There are two major routes between the two cities, one inland and one along the coast line. If you've got time to stop over for a few days along the way, the coastal route is the one to go. The inland route is boring, but a little bit quicker with better roads.
The Transkei coast (also called Wild Coast) is about 4-5 hours from Durban and is very pretty, quite rugged and largely unspoilt by resorts. Coffee bay is a popular destination. This area is generally not as developed as the rest of the country, which sometimes puts tourists off, and as such has a more "African" feel.

This route is very popular with tourists, so there are lots of places to stay and things to see and do along the way. Probably advisable to book in advance.

There are serious problems with the main highway near Port Elizabeth which was washed away and traffic is being diverted inland. Since this is your first trip to South Africa I would urge you to check out the security situation before undertaking a visit. Warnings to visitors have been issued to travellers by the British Foreign Office, US,Australia,Canada and New Zealand. There are serious crime incidents everywhere- at Airports,Restaurants,Beaches,National Parks,Roads,Private residences many of which are resulting in death,serious injury,rape,assault etc. A Jeweller Shop at the V&A Waterfront was attacked and robbed by armed gangsters firing guns a few weeks back and Chelsy Davy ( Prince Harry's girlfriend) had a similar experience in a restaurant around the same time.Table Mountain is also risky because of the high incidence of attacks on Tourists and certainly it would be risky to go out after dark. Do not rely on the Tourist Industry for information on crime as they are in complete denial and desperate to keep the news away from Tourists for fear of losing money. The website www.crimexposouthafrica.org is far more reliable since it is South Africans detailing their personal experiences. This website was set up by a local businessman in response to the attempted cover up of crime by the Government , who more or less control the Media, and is widely supported. If you go ahead with your visit please be very vigilant especially with a 9 year old and do not turn your back for one minute. You can get lucky or conversely like other Tourists be robbed, raped or returned in a bodybag.

Wonderful drive.Most beautiful country but only stop at Class hotel establishments and always drive with your doors locked,- especially at road junctions and traffic lights. In fact at night always stop short at the lights but be ready to do a RUNNER even on the red. Good Luck.

I stay in Virginia and that i truly favor to visit Hawaii. Virginia is desirable too with the blue ridge mountains, VA capes, the seashores, rivers and our surroundings. i could not in any respect leave to stay some position else yet i'd truly bypass to Hawaii even with the actuality that. that is homestead even with the actuality that I dream of being on the coastline in Hawaii

Take the Outeniqua Choo Choo steam train between Knysna and George (you can do a return trip) - there is some amazing scenery and I'm sure a steam train would keep a 9 year amused!

Er.... Don't stop... ever, for any reason... nada.
Lock car doors and keep all valuables out of sight. Don't have maps on display or anything that marks you out as a tourist.
