In the cartoon, he was Prince Adam.
BUT
I remember getting a He-Man action figure when they first came out (in the early 80s) before the cartoon. With the toy came a small comic book with the origin of the character. Apparently He-man was a member of a caveman-like tribe (which would explain the loincloth) and one day he came apon a monster (like a big purple bear or something) attacking an old woman. He killed the monster (a cool picture of him cracking the thing's jaw by wrenching it open - blood and everything, pretty big when you're five) and saved the woman - who turned out to be the sorceress (that bird lady). The sorceress gives him an enchanted sword and sheild and . . . I can't remember what comes next. I don't know where skeletor or battlecat came from or anything.
Anyone else seen that before?

Dolph Lundgren AKA Drago in Rocky V. That is if you watched Masters of the Universe the live action movie. Yeah, 1987 was a great year for that movie.
