It is based on the other player on the link! it is like an exchange of items or a suprised item will come out randomly! you will never know what to come out!! A mystery Gift is only present if you have a lnked cable a you linked with someone else!

jasel is describing the mystery gift function from pokemon gold/silver/crystal.

in fire/leaf/emerald, it is different. mystery gift lets your game talk to a wonder spot at a nintendo event.
