I would think it is a directly proportional relationship. The higher the human activity the faster the rate of metabolism.
Simply put, the more you work the faster your body breaks down the food and fat in you to create energy for your body's work.

The older you get the more you have to work to increase the metanolic rate.

If you work 'arder n faster then you need a bigger supply of fuel to do so, so your digestion speeds up aong wif yer breathin ter supply more. Hope they pay you handsomely for your efforts.
Sounds like Slavery to me.
