No human being can claim being %100 'understanding' for the simple fact that we conceive everything through our own senses. But feeling other people's pain and sympathy depends on how much one can overcome selfishness. Empathy can be both emotional and intellectual as both are parts of our soul.
What the people of the world need now is to overcome borders, politicians, clergymen, militarymen and other leftovers of our primitive societies and become one.

I think it's an emotion because I can typically know what everyone in a group around me is feeling and thinking. Maybe I'm processing a lot of data, but I've noticed this since I was young and have been so accurate, I tend to "translate" for people to a useful end. I don't think I knew enough to process it intellectually when I was still young.
Since I was a kid, also, strangers have spilled their guts to me. I know all about the cashier at the grocery store and my friend who goes through the same line never has had the cashier confide in her.
I think it's an emotion and not a thought process because in the months before my precious precious father died unexpectedly and suddenly, I began having a sense that dad was going to die, but kept repressing this information when it would bubble up to a degree that is still shocking and saddening to this moment. If it was an intellectual process, I think it would have been more resistant to the defense mechanisms, like denial, that stopped me from facing this painful intuition.

In matters of religion, yes I can see others point of views. In matters of common sense and reality, I tend to go with what I see, so no, it's harder to see the wrong point of view.
