good quality hand made shoes. Never brown in town so black as you live in new york and well polished brogues. Not the square ended ones though - they look silly.
Pin striped suits black or blue with chalk stripes and a waistcoat - silk ties - no patterns. Cashmere sweaters in a plain dark hue - leather gloves - not cheap ones - umberallas, full length and black - retro layered clothing in grey / black for example cardigans, sweaters - t shirts.
Braces for your pants - we call them trousers in the uk so refer to them as trousers and you will be ahead of the game. Pants are what we wear under our trousers.
Wear dark socks, no patterns and certainly not white socks.
No trainers, they are for sheep who want to waste their money on a brand name. infact, no brand names or labels on anything you wear.
If you follow this good advice you will look a proper gent and no mistake.
And, if you really want to get ahead, get a hat.

New York is full of Americans so you need to bear that in mind, try something in bright red & yellow checks.
