Singapore is an independent country. It is essentially an island city state but it is connected to the Asian Mainland by a bridge. It has a population of about 4 million. It broke away from Malaysia in 1965 because Malaysia was predominantly Malay people and Singapore is 70% Chinese. It's independence was assured by the presence of New Zealand troops, who helped the Singaporeans face off the Malaysians and Indonesians and we stationed half of our army in Singapore for 30 years. New Zealand's closest allies are Singapore and The Phillippines. We used to be closely allied to Australia and the USA but we walked away from them over nuclear arms issues and we no longer have any defence treaties with Aust or US. Lucky us. We said no to war in Iraq. We always say yes to sticking up for Singapore. The two countries are very friendly despite fundamental differences in political style. We also stuck by Australia over East Timor against Indonesia, Indonesians hate Australians but they like New Zealanders, because they respect us for standing by our mates and standing up to the Indonesian military. Indonesia, the fourth largest country in the world, was a problem when it was a police state but is now a democracy. Both Indonesia and Malaysia wanted to control Singapore in the 1960s. It was founded by the British in the early 19th century and is basically downtown South East Asia. Even New Zealanders go to Singapore for shopping trips. Just a bit of extra info that you did not ask for but there you go. Singapore is very strict but if you are not a criminal its a great place to visit. The Peoples Action Party has governed the country since 1965, PAP for short, otherwise known as Pay and Pay, because thats what you do to keep them in power, you pay and then you pay some more.
