I want to upgrade my current hard drive which is ATA/66 to a "larger faster" drive, but it is very hard to find "larger faster" ATA/66 drives. So I was wondering if I could just buy and connect an ATA/100 drive.

An ATA/133 controller card is cheap and easy to find. I would get one of those, pop it in a pci slot and do whatever you want.

OK, so you can't outrun the 66 cable. That's really not all that bad. You can still max out what the cable will pass. How about setting up a RAID array with a matched pair of those 66s? Or go ahead and upgrade to the 100s with faster spin and fatter cache. You can hang on to them when you finally upgrade the board or not--as suits your budget.

yes - ata is the interface, so they are the same 66 and 100 are the amount of pins on the cord.
