It is...especially when you had a painful past. But time heals wounds and lessons are learned.

Personally I do not need/want to let go of the past. Most of my life gave me many thing that was good, sure there is always times I do not think of unless someone brings it up, suppose it was not something of a lot of importance to me.
I have detested a few places I have been, but there is nothing that would make me want to either hold on to it or forget or let go. When I remember and recall the greatest of times or things that I had rather had not happen, I learned, I am who I am because of what has accrued in my life, I learned a lot of lessons, I am old enough to know the importance of what got me here and how I handled any/all.

We can't. We need to learn from the past to build any kind of a future.
To stop grieving - very hard - but I think people need to be more patient with themselves. Don't expect yourself to "get over" grief, or "let go of" the past. Grief is part of the human condition, and the past is our foundation for living.
The thing we need to let go of is the urge to keep searching for the "do over" button. It doesn't exist. And we waste a lot of time and frustration groping for it.
Live in the present. Look to the future. No matter how hard it is (and OH, IT IS!) As for the past - try to learn from the mistakes, but to dwell on the happiness, without wishing for it back - just remembering it with a smile - and looking forward again.

Yes, and expensive too. All those lawyer fees and alimony, then the vindictive phone calls and tire slashings. Yep, it's really hard to put it behind you and move on.
