It happened to me 2 years ago...after we had been together for 4 1/2 years (I was 22, and he was 23) and now my best friend's boyfriend's dad died and she's asked me what I think the outcome is going to be.......and I told her she's better off breaking up with him so he can deal. Was I wrong?

Now that the paternal figure is not there, the young man may realize he must "sort out" what he values and what his goals are as a mature man. I do not think it is inevitable that there should be a breakup and the death may make the couple grow closer if it has a solid basis.

yes i wouldn't have advised your friend that. He just lost his father. and now he must feel great lost my girlfriend too. He will be very heart broken and sad, If this girlfriend cares for him she will want to be there at this tragic time helping him through this supporting him being there when he feels blue down or just wants some body there.

I lost my mother a few months back and didnt' have anyone to be there for me and hold me its a sad time. I know I would have felt better if i had someone. Don't have her desert her boyfriend thats really low. But by the same token she should be there causse she wants to be there for him. He doesn't need pity. thats wrong too.

Yes, everyone deals with death differently. Some people just can't adjust to the person being gone. Some people need alot of support and love. Some just want to be left alone. When you love someone you need to be there for them and try and understand them even though its hard and even though they may need time to adjust.

a relationship in early 20's doesn't have to end because of the dad's passing....in fact she can support him through it the best way she knows how.
