I live near Palm Springs, CA and spotted a large tree with massive spikes along the entire trunk. Not like the Honey Locust, these are big, solid SPIKES, not thorns. In the tree are growing fluffy, cotton-ball-looking things. No one seems to know what it is... and I can't get an anwers from Google. Any ideas anyone?

Thanks!
Eric

Joshua Tree could be right, based on the description. It might also be part of the Family Fouquieriaceae which includes the Cirio or Boojum Tree

It sounds like something that our nursery received the other day. I forget the name of it ....Pachy(something). It is a succulent and grows to a height of approx 2 metres and produces a brilliant white flower every couple of years. It has large spikes from base to top and the leaves are long and thin. The trunk is a grey colour. I will find out for sure in the morning and get back to you.

The name of the plant I was referring to is Pachypodium.
