it's like comparing apples & oranges
the core duo processor has 2 processors or cores in single die, compared to the single core in the p4 ht processor
as for myself, rarely do i do a single job or single window when i am working on my computer. this is where the 2 cores share the workload & really come into play !
regarding: Fastest processor > for notebooks
it is the intel core 2 duo t7600., 2.33 ghz, 667 mhz fsb & an awesome 4 mb l2 cache., besides featuring 64 bit technology
if i were to personally buy & choose the processor, i'd buy the t7200 > 2.0 ghz, 667 mhz fsb, 4 mb l2 cache & 64 bit technology !
the 4 mb l2 cache is really awesome & appeals very much to me., sure the t7400 & t7600 feature faster clock speeds, but price differential is too much & NOT worth paying for
i would gladly settle for the t7200 !
< i guess it would beat the p4 3.0 ghz with ht black & blue, running most applications, epecially multi-tasking ! >

Define faster
Technically - no the clock speed is 1.73 GHz vs 3.0 GHz for the old computer.
The Core duo can do more processing on each clock cycle
If the applications / OS are designed for multiple CPUs
and I haven't even scratched the surface yet
You will be happy with the laptop.

Performance wise the old one 3.0 GHz is faster then the new laptop duo 1.7 GHz but in battery consumption, less heat and light weight processor is the laptop one.

The better way to compare is MFLOPS. Which is the number of floating point operations. You can't go by processor speed alone. Due to overhead your dual core cpu may be equivalent
to 3.1 Ghz single core cpu.

Yes it is but you will not understand it - in day by day use there is no difference. To have faster computer you need faster HDD(5400 rpm or better) and more ram (1 Gb at least). Anyway happy new laptop :):)

Performance wise, it depends on the software and Operating system you use... But it won't be much faster, might actually run even a margin slower.
Consider AMD if you really need SPEED, PERFORMANCE and Value FOR YOUR MONEY!!!!!!
